I’m a HGV driver for First Mile easy recycling. In my spare time I like to watch football, go to the cinema and travel as much possible.
The results surprised me for two reasons; firstly because I’m far more exposed to pollution than the vast majority
of the general public and secondly because pollution levels are far higher inside my lorry than outside.
Although I had an idea my levels would be higher than the other participants, I was surprised by just how high they were. I told my friends and family about the results and they were even more surprised than I was.
Dean drives a HGV lorry around central and west London for up to nine hours a day collecting recycling from 100 businesses.
"Pollution levels are far higher inside my lorry than outside"
Dean’s exposure was more than double that of participants who walked, cycled or took public transport.
Although many people think there has been a lot of excessive reporting recently about pollution and the climate, I think it can only serve as a positive thing
if it makes people sit up and pay attention to the real dangers and effects of poor air quality. Hopefully then
they willfeel more responsibility towards improving it,
if not for themselves but for future generations.
The biggest thing I have taken from being involved in this project is just how serious the problem of poor air quality is living in London and that most people breathing it are unaware of the effects.
